'The Grand Inquisitor' in Brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevsky
[ send me this essay ]
One of the great joys of The Brothers Karamazov is the passion from which they view life. Another passion seems to have been a need to understand God and Jesus Christ. The legend of the Grand Inquisitor, as well as the book, The Brothers Karamazov, tells a tale of a journey to understand the purposes of God. The Inquisitor believes that the cause of the suffering and disharmony is the freedom, or self will, that God bestowed upon man. It is his contention that man is too weak to manage the burden of freedom. Dostoevsky longed for a spiritual union among people consolidated by the desire for all-embracing harmony . He regarded such a union to be a true wealth that consists not of golden dresses but of the joy of common accord. In a clash between reason and love Dostoevsky favored love. This 8 page paper examines the fable from the perspective of Dostoevsky's views on religion, suffering and freedom. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
